How to care for your Sheepskin Products

We've posted this page of care tips to help you take better care of your sheepskin products. With proper care, your sheepskin items will look better and last longer. Our web site offers a full line of cleaners and protectors to enhance the beauty and extend the life of your sheepskin products.

How To Clean and Care for Sheepskin Slippers
Why maintain your sheepskin slippers? Proper cleaning will significantly prolong the life of your footwear investment.

For the outer suede leather only:
Clean the leather with a damp, soft cloth. When dry, buff lightly with a clean brass or nylon bristle brush or nubuck brush to restore the nap of the leather fibers. Scuff marks and dirt may be gently removed with a suede-cleaning eraser or suede stone. We suggest spraying the outer suede surface with a good water based weather protector like our Cloud Nine Sheepskin Water Repellent & Stain Guard, which may be purchased along with your shoes. Dirt will have a less chance of sticking to treated suede.

When your sheepskin slippers get dirty:
Use only non-enzyme liquid soaps specifically formulated for washing leather, like our Sheepskin Shampoo. This will give them a deep cleaning and help keep them looking like new.
We do not recommend Woolite or laundry detergents. We recommend hand washing for best results.

HAND WASHING
  1. Test an area first for colorfastness by diluting a dime-sized amount of shampoo with water and hand washing a small section of the item.
  2. Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water and add an appropriate amount (see back label of bottle) of Sheepskin Shampoo to the water. Do not pour shampoo directly onto the slippers.
  3. Scrub slippers gently using hands, a soft cloth, or a very soft-bristled brush.
  4. Rinse thoroughly.
  5. After washing, wrap the slippers in a towel to absorb the excess water.
  6. Let slippers dry naturally, away from heat, wind and sunlight. DO NOT dry sheepskin slippers in the dryer or expose them to excessive heat or direct sunlight. This is a sure way to ruin them.
  7. When dry, brush the fur out with a wire brush if desired.
Moose Leather Only
On dry shoes, use a horsehair brush to remove any dust or dirt. Clean the leather with a damp, soft cloth. When dry, buff lightly with a clean soft horsehair brush. For shoes stained by road salt, solvents or other substances, you can try to remove stains with a soft cloth dampened with our Sheepskin Shampoo and water. Remove the soap residue with a water-dampened soft cloth, and allow the shoes to dry.

Care for Sheepskin Car Seat Covers

Again, a little preventative maintenance is the key to protecting your seat cover investment. With proper care, you'll keep your seat covers looking good! The problems begin when dirt and dust make their way down into the wool fibers. Over time, this dirt can build up, eventually acting just like sandpaper by shearing down the wool fibers each time you slide into and out of the car seat. This will cause the wool to wear down to the hide creating unwanted bald spots. By periodically brushing and vacuuming the covers to remove unwanted dirt and lint, you'll help revitalize matted fur and add longer life to your sheepskin seat covers.
After installing your seat covers, vacuum them to remove all loose fibers and then lightly spray the covers with our All purpose Sheepskin Cleaner & Protector. Allow them to dry overnight. This will surface coat the seat cover with a protective coating for defense against dirt. Keep the spray bottle in the glove compartment of your car to quickly clean up spills on your seat covers.

  • When your seat covers get dirty:
The covers can be dry-cleaned or spot cleaned with cold water and a mild soap, but these methods do not always provide good results.
  • For best results, we recommend investing in a Cloud Nine Sheepskin Seat Care Kit, which includes our special waterless seat cover cleaner and soft bristle sheepskin brush.
Note: We do not recommend washing and do not warranty covers that have been washed. Washing can remove the natural oils, dry out the backs of the skins, tear away straps or shrink the seat cover.

Care for Sheepskin Accessories & Auto Accessories

By periodically using a soft bristle brush to remove unwanted dirt and lint, you'll help revitalize matted fur and add longer life to your sheepskin accessories.

  • For hand wear and headgear:
We suggest spraying the outer suede surface with a good weather protector like Cloud Nine Sheepskin Water Repellent & Stain Guard and then let them air dry. Dirt will have a less chance of sticking to treated suede.
  • For auto accessories:
When it's time to give them a deep cleaning, we recommend either hand or machine wash with our Sheepskin Shampoo. Then allow them to air dry. We do not recommend Woolite or laundry detergents. Finally, fluff up the wool with a wire brush.
Care for Washable Sheepskin Rugs

Cleaning your sheepskin rug is a lot like washing your own hair, and then brushing it into shape.
  • Brush up the wool pile with a sheepskin wire brush and shake out the skin as needed or vacuum with attachment only.
  • Use approved non-enzyme cleaner. We recommend using our Cloud Nine Sheepskin Shampoo . For stubborn dirt, presoak item in Sheepskin Shampoo for 20 minutes. We do not recommend Woolite or laundry detergents.
  • Wash on a gentle cycle with lukewarm water (do not exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • Rinse thoroughly then add a good wool conditioner like Sheepskin Fleece Fluff to the final rinse to soften the leather side and condition the wool.
  • Then rinse again and spin dry.
  • Dry naturally away from heat. Flex skin while drying to soften leather side, then brush to restore wool pile. Note that skin shrinkage of 8% to 10% may occur and is normal. The leather side may become stiff after washing so massage the leather side to soften the skin again.
  • Sheepskin is Dry-cleanable(A)(40) with either white spirits or perchlorethylene.
LONG WOOL BLACK OR DARK COLORED PELTS, OR ITEMS TRIMMED WITH LONG BLACK WOOL:
We DO NOT recommend machine washing dark colored pelts or items with black trim, as color bleeding may occur. We do recommend hand washing with Sheepskin Shampoo or dry-cleaning. Sheepskin is Dry-cleanable(A)(40) with either white spirits or perchlorethylene. These pelts may also be surface cleaned with Cloud Nine Sheepskin Cleaner & Conditioner.
Colors, except black, that are also UNLINED on the back of the pelt are hand or machine washable with approved soap. Medical and infant rugs are also hand or machine washable.
(Please note that we cannot guarantee washing or cleaning results with any sheepskin product, since many factors beyond our control may affect the outcome of cleaning. Such factors are: exposure to heat and light, wear and tear on item, age, hardness or softness of water used, temperature of water used, natural variations in the product, etc.)

Care for Non-Washable Design Rugs and Pillows

  • Periodically, brush wool pile with a wire brush and shake skin as needed or vacuum with attachment only.
  • Use our All Purpose Sheepskin Cleaner & Protector to surface clean. Lightly spray the sheepskin side (holding the bottle about 12 inches away) to add protection against dirt, then allow to dry.
  • Sheepskin is Dry-cleanable(A)(40) with either white spirits or perchlorethylene.
Care for Sheepskin & Synthetic Toys

Sheepskin toys require special, but simple care.
  • Surface clean with a mixture of Sheepskin Shampoo and water.
  • Use a sponge or clean cloth to apply suds.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clear water.
  • Roll the toy in a towel to absorb the excess water.
  • Dry naturally away from heat.
  • Brush up wool pile with a wire brush.
  • Do not put toys in a washing machine or immerse completely in water. Remember that they are stuffed with polyester fiber that they may not dry out properly if immersed in water.
